When the body is under stress, it releases the hormone cortisol. In small amounts, stress and inflammation can help the body heal. But when stress becomes chronic, it breaks down tissue, weakens the immune system, and contributes to disease. In fact, research suggests that 75–90% of human diseases are connected to stress activation. Cannabis may help restore homeostasis by easing stress and anxiety.
Why Microdosing Matters
Cannabis works best against stress when used in small, precise doses. This is because cannabinoids act in a biphasic way, low doses can ease anxiety, while high doses may worsen it.
- THC: At low doses, it can reduce anxiety; at high doses, it may trigger it.
- CBD: Effective in low to moderate doses, but can act differently depending on the person, sometimes wake-promoting, other times sedating. Its anti-anxiety effects come largely from activating serotonin receptors (5HT1A), not directly from CB1/CB2 receptors.
- CBN, myrcene, and linalool: May be more effective for insomnia and sleep issues.
- THC for PTSD: By reducing REM sleep, THC can help limit nightmares.
The terpene blend matters, too, linalool and myrcene tend to be calming, while limonene and pinene may be more energizing.
The Role of Terpenes
Terpenes are plant compounds that shape cannabis’ effects. For example:
- Beta-caryophyllene: Known for stress relief
- Limonene, pinene, THCV + THC: Can reduce stress, but in high doses may feel stimulating or “edgy”
Finding the right cannabinoid–terpene combo can help target daytime anxiety, depression, or fatigue.
Methods & Dosage: What Works Best?
Everyone’s endocannabinoid system (ECS) is unique, so responses vary. Different delivery methods also make a big difference:
- Inhalation (smoking, vaping): Fast-acting, best for sudden anxiety
- Tinctures: Kick in within 15–60 minutes, last longer—great for insomnia
- Edibles: Stronger, long-lasting (1–2 hours to feel effects)
- Inhalers: Offer more precise dosing than vaping or smoking
For stress, anxiety, and depression, one study by Washington State University found:
- 1 puff of high-CBD, low-THC cannabis reduced depression
- 2 puffs of any cannabis reduced anxiety
- 10+ puffs of high-CBD + high-THC reduced stress
Since “puffs” aren’t exact doses, tinctures with balanced ratios (THC:CBD 1:1, 2:1, or 3:1) in small amounts (0.1 — 0.25 ml, 2–3x daily) are often recommended for controlled relief.
Finding Your Ideal Dose
There’s no one-size-fits-all dose. Doctors often prescribe 2.5 mg synthetic THC (dronabinol) twice daily as a starting point. A balanced approach, such as adding 2.5 mg of CBD alongside THC, can help soften THC’s psychoactive effects.
Experimenting with different THC:CBD ratios (e.g., 3:1 and 1:3) can help identify what works best for your body and at what time of day. Some conditions may require a more precise medical plan, but for many, trial and adjustment leads to the ideal balance.
