First and foremost, you need to know the medical cannabis laws in the states that you are traveling to and through. 20 states currently accept out-of-state medical marijuana certifications, but it is important for travelers to carefully research each state’s reciprocity laws.
What’s more, if you are flying, be sure to familiarize yourself with the airline’s policy on medical marijuana. This is important, as medical marijuana is prohibited on many carrier’s aircrafts, including Delta, American Airlines, and Alaska Airlines.
What about TSA? Are they looking for medical marijuana at checkpoints?
While TSA agents are not specifically searching for medical marijuana, they are required to hand it over to law enforcement if they find it during an inspection. If this occurs in a state that has legalized medical marijuana, you can typically present your medical marijuana card and it will be returned to you.

Thinking about taking it on the train? Think again. Amtrak bans the use or transport of medical marijuana. This policy applies even in states where medical marijuana or recreational marijuana are legal.
By Car
By car also requires that you know that medical marijuana laws of each state that you are driving through and to. As such, never carry medical marijuana in a state where it is not legal.
