Maryland General Assembly passed House Bill 556 and Senate Bill 516, which develop a framework for Adult-Use Sales to begin on July 1, 2023. This means that adults, 21 and older, will be able to purchase cannabis products legally from a licensed dispensary for recreational use. There may be some confusion on what to expect come July 1, 2023, so we have gathered information on everything you need to know about adult-use cannabis legalization in Maryland. What Does HB556/SB516 Do? First and foremost, the bill allows individuals 21 and older to purchase cannabis products legally from a licensed dispensary. Existing medical cannabis dispensaries will be able to sell to adult consumers on July 1, if they choose to convert their license. Dispensary works will be offering both medical cannabis and adult-use cannabis. Check out our menu to see what we have to offer! This legislation also allows the Maryland Cannabis Administration to issue additional grower, processor, and dispensary licenses, and new incubator licenses over two licensing rounds. This means more dispensaries will be able to open and provide a business to consumers. How Can I Buy Cannabis Products? What Products Can I Purchase? Starting July 1, licensed medical cannabis dispensaries in the State of Maryland will be able to sell to adult-use cannabis. A list of licensed dispensaries that converted their license will be posted on our website before July 1. Cannabis products are subject to a 9 % sales tax (the same as alcohol). A person may purchase cannabis or cannabis products from a licensed dispensary if they display a government-issued photo ID at the point of sale that demonstrates they are 21 years or older. Individuals will only be able to purchase up to the personal use amount authorized under the law. Who Will Regulate the Expanded Medical and Adult-Use Cannabis Industry? This new legislation for adult-use cannabis legalization also establishes a new agency, the Maryland Cannabis Administration to regulate cannabis businesses in the State. Maryland Medical Cannabis Commission staff will transition to the new agency to provide continuity of operations for businesses and patients in the medical program. New regulations governing health, safety, and security will be enhanced to integrate the existing medical cannabis program regulations. Is Cannabis Still Illegal at the Federal Level? Yes, the use and possession of cannabis remains illegal under the Federal Controlled Substances Act of 1970 (CSA). States may allow adult use within their jurisdictions, but interstate transport is still prohibited under federal law. Cannabis possession also remains unlawful on federal land even within states that have legalized it. This includes federal buildings, national parks, military bases, etc. My Local Convenience Store/gas Station Sells THC products. Are These Products Legal? This legislation has established that any product containing more than 0.5 mg THC per serving and 2.5 mg THC per package may only be sold in a licensed cannabis dispensary. This requirement also extends to THC isomers like delta-8, delta-9, and delta-10. Make sure to check packaging prior to purchase to ensure that you are within the rights of the law. How Much Cannabis Will I Legally Be Able to Possess? Adults 21 years and older will be able to possess up to 1.5 ounces of cannabis flower, up to 12 grams of concentrated cannabis; or a total amount of cannabis products that do not exceed 750 mg of THC. This is known as the “personal use amount.” How Does the New Law Keep Our Roads Safe? Cannabis use in a motor vehicle (by a driver or passenger) and impaired driving remain illegal under Maryland law. Law enforcement officers can make a cannabis DUI arrest if they observe impairment. They will use a standard field sobriety testing (roadside test) method. Cannabis and Fibromyalgia in Maryland
Fibromyalgia can be devastating and debilitating, making even the simplest of chores seem overwhelming and exhausting. Fibromyalgia is a complex neurological disorder that is often misdiagnosed and misunderstood. More than 5 million Americans suffer from fibromyalgia, 80-90% being women. Some of the symptoms of fibromyalgia include chronic pain, joint stiffness, chronic fatigue, insomnia, general weakness, headaches, brain fog, digestive issues, and anxiety. The good news is that while painful, it’s not fatal or progressive. What Can Cannabis Do For Fibromyalgia? Medical marijuana can be very useful when it comes to managing pain. This makes it popular among those that suffer from fibromyalgia. Medical cannabis can help you sleep, increase your appetite, work against pain, and reduce nausea. One of the most common symptoms fibromyalgia patients have is depression and anxiety and luckily, medical marijuana can help improve moods and decrease these symptoms. The FDA has only approved three drugs for the treatment of fibromyalgia – Cymbalta, Lyrica, and Savalla. But many who have tried these medications claim they either don’t help or add to their symptoms. In a recent study, 62% of patients that have tried cannabis to treat their fibromyalgia said it was very effective. Thirty-three percent said it helped a little and only 5% said it gave them no relief at all. Of course, cannabis won’t cure fibromyalgia – there is no cure. But it can definitely make the symptoms more manageable. There are hundreds of cannabis strains that offer pain relief and will improve your sleep, so experimenting to find the perfect strain to manage your symptoms is key. Best Ways to Store Medical Marijuana
There is nothing better than a fresh batch of sticky, flavorful, and potent medical cannabis. But you must store it properly, or it gets moldy or dry. No one wants to deal with old MMJ. However, if stored properly, it can last up to 2 years! It’s up to you to protect your precious herb from drying out or molding. The ideal place to store your medical marijuana is somewhere that is dark or chilly like a basement or cellar. Heat, light, or moisture can cause your herb to mold. And exposure to oxygen can also dry it out. If you don’t have access to a basement or cellar, here are some great ways to keep your cannabis fresh and potent for longer. Best Ways to Store Your Medical Marijuana Store your medical marijuana in a dark place like a drawer. Or even better, in a dark jar to decrease the amount of light exposure. UV rays degrade the cannabinoids, which reduces the potency of your marijuana. Heat is not your medical marijuana friend. Temperatures between 77-86 degrees allow mold to grow. The ideal temperature is just a little cooler than room temp. Heat can also dry it out, which produces less than a pleasant hot, harsh smoke. Exposure to oxygen can speed up the dehydration process so the best way to store your cannabis is in an air-tight sealed jar. Let your children know your cannabis is medicine and treat it like any other prescription and harmful chemicals in your house. If you have edibles, clearly label them and make sure your children know and understand they are medicine and should not be eaten. Don’t store your grinders, pipes, or other paraphernalia with your stash. They don’t smell great. Keep your supplies separate and clean. Best Medical Marijuana Dispensary in Maryland It is ok to be picky when it comes to storing your medical marijuana. Menopause and Medical Marijuana
Research is showing that some women who are experiencing menopause and premenopausal symptoms may be using medical marijuana to find relief. For instance, a 2020 study shows that about 1 in 4 female veterans use cannabis to treat menopause symptoms. Experts suggest caution when using medical marijuana to relieve menopausal symptoms like anxiety, depression, and pain because the effects have not been fully established. However, a new study shows that the number of women finding relief through cannabis may be higher than they thought. And with the long list of benefits that researchers are still discovering, the future may include menopause relief. New Study on Menopause and Medical Marijuana The new research, published in the journal Menopause, involved more than 250 perimenopausal and postmenopausal women who were recruited through targeted ads about women’s health and cannabis use. Over 83% of study participants said they regularly used cannabis to treat menopause-related symptoms. Most of the study participants stated that cannabis is used to help improve sleep and mood and decrease anxiety symptoms. However, despite the seemingly positive findings, the study has a built-in bias since participants were recruited because of their interest in cannabis. While the study may have a built-in bias, it doesn’t take away the fact that common symptoms of menopause are the same symptoms we’ve seen proven to be helped by medical marijuana use. How Cannabis Can Help With Menopause Symptoms Researchers believe that there are several systems in the body that are affected by the endocannabinoid system. The endocannabinoid system is found to be activated by THC and CBD. These other systems include: The Future of Medical Marijuana and Menopause Relief The proliferation of medical cannabis in the United States has contributed to an increasing number of menopausal women using the drug to relieve symptoms. Given that there is a lack of clinical trials testing the effectiveness and safety of cannabis to manage menopause symptoms, more research is clearly needed. In the state of Maryland, there are several things needed to qualify for a medical marijuana card. Qualifying Medical Conditions Maryland law requires a person to have a qualifying medical condition in order to qualify for the use of medical marijuana. There are several conditions that would allow you to apply for a medical cannabis card. Common conditions that qualify include: Supporting Documentation For a Medical Marijuana Card It is important to have supporting documentation of your condition with you when you go to see your doctor. Supporting documentation is important for our providers to make an educated decision during the evaluation process for the safest outcome. Most places will accept all forms of supporting documentation and/or new and existing medications that have been used to treat the condition prior to the qualifying appointment. You may need to access your medical records which your primary care doctor should be able to help you with as well. Registration With the State of Maryland Registration with the state of Maryland is necessary for us to complete the process and issue you a certificate for medical cannabis. Please follow the steps carefully to avoid any further delay. 1) You will need a valid email to check immediately after registering. Certification Appointment to Receive Medical Marijuana Card During your certification appointment, your doctor will assess any supporting documents, medication, and new patient forms in regard to the condition you are seeking cannabis. If you are a registered or qualifying patient, you will then receive a signed Physician Certification Form that will allow them to visit any of the dispensaries located in the state of Maryland. In order to receive the Physician Certification Form, a patient must show proof of Maryland residency and pay the physician’s visit. How the Sun Affects Your High
While medical cannabis can affect people in many different ways, there is something to be said about the effects of sunlight on your cannabis session. In this article, we will take a look at how the sun can affect your high. Can Partaking Outdoors Impact the Effects of Your Weed? There are two things that go a long way in determining your experience with medical cannabis. One is your environment and the other is your mindset in your cannabis session. When we partake indoors, we are usually in a familiar setting – like our living room – where our mind has already processed much of the stimuli in that room. But when we venture outdoors, there are so many things around that can stimulate our minds and senses. The Added Stimuli of the Outdoors Could Enhance the Effects of Cannabis From sunlight to the sounds of birds and the smells of the outdoors, there are so many things for our brains to process when we venture outdoors. When partaking in a cannabis session, our brain’s ability to process information tends to slow down a bit. So, if our ability to process information slows down after we consume and we step outside and are overloaded with an abundance of things to process – this could stimulate your brain and boost the psychoactive effects of your cannabis. This is just one way that your medical marijuana experience could be enhanced by the sun. The Sun and Its Endorphin Boost Another way that the sun could affect your high is through the endorphins that are released when we are exposed to the sun. Endorphins are hormones that are released when we feel pain or stress. They can also be released by our bodies during pleasurable experiences like exercise, eating, acupuncture, getting a massage, or sex. The UV rays associated with sunshine can help to release endorphins. A study conducted in 2014 found that when we are exposed to sunshine, the sun’s UV rays can increase endorphin levels by 30 to 50%. So, when you combine sunshine with cannabis’ own feel-good cannabinoids, like anandamide, it’s possible that the mix of these feel-good chemicals could result in an elevated state of bliss and euphoria. Too Much of Two Good Things Can be Bad While sunshine can enhance your experience during a cannabis session, it is important to be aware and proceed with caution. Here are a few tips to help you get the most out of your experience.
