What are the Effects of Cannabis on Hair?

Several producers of cannabis products often exaggerate medical claims, as do advocates for cannabis legalization. In this exploration, we will examine the potential impact of cannabis on hair.

Cannabis and Hair Health — Is There a Link?

Opinions vary regarding the effects of cannabis on hair. Some say that cannabis promotes hair growth, while others argue that it leads to hair loss. Recommendations range from inhaling cannabis for hair benefits to using topical creams and alternative methods. Additionally, there are proponents of THC for stimulating hair growth, while others advocate for CBD.

So, what’s the connection between cannabis and hair growth/loss? In short, it’s a complex and uncertain relationship. It’s important to highlight that cannabis doesn’t have a singular, definitive effect on hair growth. This complexity arises for two main reasons.

Firstly, hair growth is influenced by numerous factors, encompassing both genetic and environmental aspects. While cannabis may have some impact in certain cases, it’s unlikely to be the sole determining factor.

Secondly, cannabis consists of a myriad of active compounds, and each strain is unique. Arguing that a specific effect of cannabis on hair growth overlooks the fact that cannabis is not a uniform substance but rather a combination of diverse elements.

With that in mind, we aim to dissect the topic and explore the potential effects of THC and CBD in isolation on hair growth. Even so, the answers to these questions remain unclear.

Hair Health and THC

THC stands out as the predominant cannabinoid in many cannabis strains, responsible for the well-known “high.” Despite widespread misinformation surrounding the impact of THC on hair health, let’s unravel the available research.

Serum Testosterone

In a 2017 study examining THC’s influence on testosterone levels, researchers delved into the subject with a sample of 1,577 men. Previous studies had yielded mixed and contradictory findings, prompting this investigation.

The study’s conclusion highlighted that recency, not frequency, played a crucial role in determining testosterone levels. Men who had most recently used cannabis exhibited the highest serum testosterone levels, while those who had never used or had not recently used cannabis displayed normal levels.

Although the effects on hair health remain unclear, it is suggested that elevated testosterone levels might:

  • Foster bodily hair growth
  • Stimulate oil production on the scalp
  • Heighten the likelihood/severity of male pattern baldness

However, the question of whether THC specifically influences these aspects of hair health remains unresolved.

CBD and Hair

CBD, the second most prevalent cannabinoid in cannabis, is believed to predominantly promote positive effects on hair growth. However, the extent to which this holds true remains uncertain.

Cannabinoid Receptors on the Scalp

The scalp is found to be equipped with CB1 and CB2 receptors, making it responsive to cannabinoids.

In a study exploring the impact of topically applied CBD on hair growth, intriguing findings emerged. The study, involving 28 male and 7 female participants, revealed that a daily application of 3 to 4mg of topical CBD appeared to enhance non-vellus hair growth.

It’s important to highlight that the same study suggests that other cannabinoids and general cannabis consumption may have adverse effects on hair growth.

A 2023 study shed light on why CBD could stimulate hair growth. It discovered that topically applied CBD partially inhibits CB1 receptors on the scalp, leading to hair shaft elongation. Additionally, CBD binds to vanilloid TRPV1 receptors, influencing hair follicle function.

Interestingly, the study emphasizes that the effects are dosage-dependent, with a caution that more is not always better. Higher CBD doses, according to the study, may activate TRPV4 receptors, causing hair follicles to prematurely enter the catagen stage—resulting in detachment at the base and subsequent hair loss. Therefore, while moderate doses may encourage hair growth, higher doses could potentially accelerate hair loss.

Cannabis and Hair Health

The impact of cannabis on hair health remains highly uncertain. In the case of THC, drawing definite conclusions is challenging and should be avoided. Regarding CBD, while the truth is still unclear, there’s some suggestion that topical CBD creams could potentially promote hair growth.

However, it’s crucial to distinguish between hair growth in a clinical setting and real-life scenarios. Relying solely on CBD may not be sufficient to address conditions like alopecia and baldness, but it could contribute to overall hair health.
